Ridge cancels Test Site visit

Monday, Jan. 7, 2002 | 2:04 a.m.

A pressing schedule has forced Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge to cancel Wednesday's tour of the counter-terrorism facilities at the Nevada Test Site, a spokesman said today.

Ridge had planned to visit the facilities with Gov. Kenny Guinn and Nevada Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign on his way to the site of 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, but had to postpone the Las Vegas area visit because of some late developing meetings in Washington, spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

Reid and Ensign are encouraging the Bush administration to develop the Test Site facilities into a national counter terrorism training center for law enforcement authorities.

Johndroe said Ridge plans to reschedule his trip at a later date.

Ridge is considering the Reid-Ensign proposal as part of his national homeland security plan, Johndroe said.
