Gibbons to seek Supreme Court post

District Judge Mark Gibbons announced today that he will be running for Nevada Supreme Court Justice Cliff Young's position in the next election.

Young announced in November that he would not seek a fourth term when his term expires at the end of the year.

Gibbons said he wants to bring "energy and expertise to the Supreme Court to reduce the time everyone in the court system must wait for a final resolution of their case."

Gibbons, 51, was elected to District Court in 1996 and has presided over many high-profile trials, including those involving Jessica Williams and Clarence Dozier.

Williams is serving a prison term of 18 to 48 years after being convicted in the accident that killed six Las Vegas teenagers on Interstate 15 in March 2000.

Dozier is serving three life sentences for drugging and sexually assaulting two women on videotape.

Gibbons was elected chief judge in July by his fellow District Court judges, and he was appointed in September by the Supreme Court to be one of 15 members statewide on the Jury Improvement Commission.

Before he was a judge, Gibbons spent 21 years as a private attorney. He specialized in civil litigation.

Gibbons graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 1972 and Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles in 1975.
