Lady Rebels to play on ESPN2
Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 | 11:33 a.m.
The UNLV women's basketball team will play its first nationally televised game in almost nine years when it faces New Mexico on the road in a conference opener Sunday (ESPN2, noon).
Lady Rebels head coach Regina Miller hopes the game will draw positive attention to the team.
"I think it's added excitement for us to be on national TV," Miller said. "People who haven't seen us before, AP voters who haven't seen us will finally have an opportunity to see this team from the desert.
"It'll be great to show that UNLV is still a very strong program in the West and our conference is one of the best in the country."
The Lady Rebels will try to win their eighth straight game today when they host Northern Arizona at 5 p.m. in the Cox Pavilion.
"They're a very good team," Miller said, mindful not to look too far ahead.
Still, it's hard to forget the importance of Sunday's game.
UNLV (11-1), has only one loss this year, to 10th-ranked Georgia, a team it led by nine at halftime. New Mexico (11-3) is riding a six-game winning streak.
A win at the raucous Pit in Albuquerque would most likely vault the Lady Rebels into the top 25.
