Judge closes Internet site

Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 | 9:55 a.m.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against unofficial South Carolina lottery Internet websites owned by a Texas law student.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Perry's order prohibits Sparticus Heyward from operating a website under any of his domains.

The law student at Houston's Texas Southern University owns the sites www.sclottery.com, www.southcarolinalottery.com, www.scarolinalottery.com and www.sclotto.com.

Visitors to the site www.sclottery.com find a message urging them to spend their money on pornographic material instead of taking a gamble with the South Carolina Education Lottery. The site promised to show porn on Jan. 7th to coincide with the South Carolina lottery's starting date.

Heyward, a John's Island native, wanted the state to purchase the registered addresses for six figures.

Instead, the South Carolina Education Lottery registered www.sceducationlottery.com. The site, which will contain information on new games, how to play and how to claim winnings, is expected to be up by Jan. 7.
