Man charged in wife’s killing goes on trial

Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 | 9:45 a.m.

Jury selection was slated to begin this afternoon in the trial of a Las Vegas attorney accused of killing his former wife shortly before Christmas 2000.

Police allege Alfred "Chip" Centofanti III shot Virginia Centofanti between five and seven times on Dec. 20 while his parents were visiting the couple's 4-month-old child in an upstairs bedroom of his home in the 8700 block of Wintry Garden.

Centofanti, who has been released after posting $250,000 bail, is alleged to have used one of the guns police had seized from him during a domestic dispute earlier in the month. In that incident, Virginia Centofanti, 25, was arrested after police found marks on her husband's face. Each accused the other of brandishing weapons during the argument.

Police said Centofanti picked up the seized weapons the day Virginia Centofanti was shot, which was also eight days after their divorce had become final.

Centofanti's parents have custody of the infant child, and Virginia Centofanti's son from a previous relationship is living with her parents.
