Chalone Vineyard ‘99 Chardonnay

Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 | 8:13 a.m.

Chalone is, and has been for decades, one of the leading lights in the world of California wines. Years ago its Chardonnay was prohibitively expensive. It is still pricey, but it has come back to the field impressively in terms of price. The grapes are grown in reddish soil at an altitude of nearly 2,000 feet, and the wine is soft and buttery, round, powerful and intense with oak. It is the quintessential California Chardonnay, exactly the sort of wine that started the Chardonnay craze nearly 20 years ago, and on the downside, the sort that many jaded wine drinkers have had enough of.

Available at Nevada Wine Cellar and Cost Plus, $28.99.
