Casino executive leaves

Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002 | 9:07 a.m.

ATLANTIC CITY -- Alfred J. Luciani has resigned as president and chief executive officer of the Sands Hotel & Casino after more than two years on the job.

Luciani, 56, also resigned last week from the board of directors at GB Holdings, which runs the casino. A successor was not named for any of the positions Luciani held, and neither he or Sands officials were available for comment.

The New Jersey state Casino Control Commission requires that Sands name an interim president within 30 days, and that a permanent successor be chosen within 120 days.

Luciani, who earned $318,745 last year, was hired by Sands in November 1999, when the casino was operating under bankruptcy protection. Before taking the job, he ran Luciani & Associates, a gaming industry consulting firm that specializes in foreign jurisdictions.

Prior to that, he worked from 1971-79 for the state Attorney General's Office, Division of Criminal Justice, rising to the position of deputy director. He served on the Governor's Staff Policy Group, which helped draft the Casino Control Act.

He went on to work for the Golden Nugget casino hotel here and, after it was sold, moved to Las Vegas, where he served as president of Golden Nugget Inc.

Other jobs included chief executive of Foxwoods Resort Casino and American Gaming & Entertainment Ltd.
