Nuclear office reorganized

A reorganization of the National Nuclear Security Administration will result in the Las Vegas office being split into two entities to streamline operations, but does not necessarily mean workers will be laid off, officials said today.

Under the realignment plan, the Nevada Operations Office will become two offices -- the Nevada Service Office and the Las Vegas Site Office.

The service office will oversee human resources, budget, contracts and other administrative duties. The site office will oversee technical aspects such as experiments, safety and security at the Nevada Test Site and other locations, officials said.

"Our administrator John Gordon wants these changes to be made with minimal impact to our employees, avoiding layoffs at all possible costs," Darwin Morgan, spokesman for the Nevada Operations Office, said. "That does not mean there won't be transfers and other movements."
