Las Vegas area fishing report: Boaters land some stripers

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

There have been reports of Lake Mead boaters having good success for striped bass in the Overton Arm while there has been only limited success in recent days in the Boulder Basin.

Nevada Division of Wildlife creel census clerks said the better action for stripers has been taking place at Stewart's Point and Fire Cove in the Overton Arm where boaters are catching fish by drifting with anchovies. One angler caught a 14-pound channel catfish at Stewart's Point late last week.

Striper fishing has been very slow this week in Las Vegas Bay for both shore anglers and boaters.

One angler reported that he caught and released three small crappie while fishing at night over the weekend in the Virgin River area. There have been no other reports of crappie being caught in the Overton Arm.

The lake's water level is now around 1176 feet and there are projections from the Bureau of Reclamation that it could drop to 1160 feet by early June. The surface water temperature in Las Vegas Bay is 60 degrees.

Mike Burrell, NDOW biologist, said he checked an angler last week at Cottonwood Cove who was cleaning a 20-pound striped bass. That fish was caught just beyond the buoys at Cottonwood.

Fishing activity was light over the weekend at Cottonwood and fishing was slow for stripers.

Afternoon temperatures have been in the 60s while nights have been in the teens.
