School District probes actions of teacher’s aide

Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 | 11:08 a.m.

The Clark County School District is investigating allegations that a teacher's aide at an elementary school taped a student's mouth shut as a form of punishment.

The incident allegedly happened about two weeks ago at Twin Lakes Elementary School, 3300 Riverside Drive, near Vegas and Rancho drives, School District spokeswoman Mary Stanley-Larsen said.

"The employee has been removed from the classroom pending the outcome of the investigation," Stanley-Larsen said, adding the aide's suspension is without pay.

School District police investigated the incident involving the 7-year-old girl, but determined there was no criminal conduct, Sgt. Ken Young, a school police spokesman, said.

Police referred the incident to the School District administrators, he said.

In Clark County, teacher's aides are required to be high school graduates or have a general equivalency diploma. They are also required to have a certificate in CPR and are under the immediate supervision of a licensed teacher, Stanley-Larsen said.
