Weekly to host Ward 5 sessions

Las Vegas Councilman Lawrence Weekly will host a series of neighborhood meetings in several areas of Ward 5 to give residents an opportunity to discuss issues affecting their communities.

Upcoming meetings, all scheduled at 6:30 p.m., are:

Today: Twin Lakes Elementary School, 3300 Riverside Drive.

Thursday: Paul E. Culley Elementary School, 1200 N. Mallard St.

March 7: Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St.

March 13: Clark County Health District, 625 Shadow Lane.

Reading program set at Winchester Center

"Read Across America," an event featuring a festive reading of "The Cat in the Hat" followed by "Seussical the Musical," a Broadway show, will begin 6 p.m. Monday at Winchester Community Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

Admission is a new or gently used book that will be donated to Clark County Community Center youth programs. Call 455-8264.

Classes scheduled for religious leaders

A series of training classes aimed at helping the clergy address domestic violence issues within their congregations are set for March through November.

The Interfaith Task Force Against Domestic Violence, along with the Safe Nest women's shelter, is offering the classes free to clergy and lay leaders at University United Methodist Church, 4412 S. Maryland Parkway.

The series is designed to help religious organizations develop safe and supportive strategies to use within their congregations to help families dealing with domestic violence issues.

The classes will be 9-11:30 a.m. on March 12, May 14, July 9, Sept. 24 and Nov. 19.

Desert Newcomers

will hold a Welcome Coffee at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Green Valley Library's Sunset Room, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway. The club is for women who have lived the Las Vegas Valley for three years or less. Call 507-3790.
