Letter: People have selves to blame for fixed elections

Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 | 8:51 a.m.

Edward Hughes' Sunday letter, "Making mockery of democracy," is an example of how deep the destruction of thinking has spread throughout society. Those (like the writer) who claim that this country is a democracy need to see reference "and to the REPUBLIC, for which it stands ..."

The writer goes on to complain that special interests buy elections. If the poor unwashed masses all vote together there isn't a corporation or group of corporations in existence that could withstand it in a vote count.

So if the unwashed masses want to cry about corporations controlling elections, they have only themselves to blame because the numbers game that is democracy has always been to their advantage. And if they say that they're influenced (obviously against their own wishes) by the corporate/political advertising, so much larger the blame!
