Homeless man sentenced

Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 | 9:42 a.m.

A 45-year-old homeless man was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Monday in connection with the death of another homeless man.

District Judge John McGroarty sentenced Ronald Mulder after he admitted prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors allege Mulder struck Charles T. Whittaker, 51, with a liquor bottle, poured a flammable liquid on him and set him on fire in May.

By entering a plea agreement, Mulder avoided a possible no-parole life sentence.
