Editorial: ‘Sandstone’ hiatus in election years
Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 | 8:48 a.m.
The Clark County government newsletter "Sandstone," sent to all residents, no longer will be published at the height of election season. County Manager Thom Reilly has adopted a policy that will prohibit the newsletter's publication from the time of candidate filings to Election Day. Earlier this year Reilly put in place a similar policy on the county's television station that restricts the appearances of county commissioners who are seeking re-election.
The policy changes affecting the newsletter and television station should have been made a long time ago by previous administrations. Four years ago concerns were raised about Sandstone providing an unfair advantage to incumbents over their challengers because the newsletter contained flattering stories about the commissioners -- yet no one from county government did anything about it.
Reilly, who has been county manager for less than a year, has stopped what, in effect, had become an unfair, one-way public financing of re-election bids for county commissioners.
