Tipping rules to be reviewed

Monday, Feb. 25, 2002 | 10:34 a.m.

The state's taxi regulations -- including a controversial one involving the tipping of drivers by businesses -- will be reviewed by the Nevada Taxicab Authority next month.

The five-member board last week was considering scrapping regulations prohibiting gratuities to drivers but because a review of all taxi regulations was on the regulators' calendar, members agreed to consider the tipping issue then.

A workshop on taxi regulations is scheduled March 11 at the Grant Sawyer Building. After that meeting, the board is expected to determine whether it wants to repeal the tipping regulations.

The issue is controversial because tipping has become commonplace, even though it is illegal, among topless and nude dancing clubs. Taxicab Authority administrators say they don't have enough officers to police the illegal practice. Tipping, they say, can lead to another illegal practice -- the diversion of customers from some businesses.
