Letter: We should get a piece of the pie
Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 | 9:50 a.m.
As it stands, Nevada residents will inevitably carry the burden of storing the nation's nuclear waste.
As the majority of the waste actually comes from private-sector, energy-producing nuclear power plants, I feel compelled to ask these power plant owners for a cut of their earnings.
Since we will be storing their waste, for which they are making a profit, it seems a fair solution. I am a native of Las Vegas and am appalled by the recent electric rate hikes we have been paying in the last couple of years.
If the Yucca Mountain Project does indeed go through, I think Nevadans should receive money or an allotment of the power/electricity that is produced from these nuclear plants in return for storing their waste.
