Check out hikes, educational programs
Free guided hikes and informative talks are offered by the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the park's Alan Bible Visitor Center northeast of Boulder City.
Reservations are required for the guided hikes. Call 293-8990. Some upcoming programs:
Who Let the Dogs Out?: A hike for canines and their families 9 a.m. Saturday at the Alan Bible Visitor Center. Call to register.
Bluffs Hike: A moderate three-mile hike Saturday that permits exploration of the edge of the desert around Las Vegas Bay.
Cranes Nest Rapids Hike: A four-mile, moderate hike Sunday that leads down a wash to the Colorado River.
Hiking Lake Mead National Recreation Area: A one-hour program Sunday that focuses on hiking within the recreation area.
HBC Las Vegas
will present Kindervision, a free community service program dedicated to the protection and safety of children at 3 p.m. Saturday at 4884 E. Lake Mead Blvd. For more information, call 284-6425.
The fourth annual NASCAR Driver Auction
to benefit the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities, begins with a concert at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Sam's Town. Tickets are $35. Call (888) 464-2468.
The 18th annual Miss Saloon Sweetheart
Showcase will be noon Sunday at the Silverton hotel. The event will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Research of Breast Cancer. Tickets are $20. Call 362-0933.
Red Rock Canyon
National Conservation Area will host the Las Vegas Astronomical Society program "Exploring the Moon," 6 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Visitors Center. Call 363-1921.
Culture Shock Las Vegas
presents its fifth annual song and dance production "Takin It to the Streets" at 7 p.m. Saturday at Palo Verde High School, 333 Pavilion Center Drive. Admission is $15. Call 281-7588.
Free carotid artery, body oxygen level
