Republic workers reject contract proposal

Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 | 10:52 a.m.

Some 300 recycling workers of Las Vegas garbage hauler Republic Services of Southern Nevada, who were organized in July by Teamsters Local 631, overwhelmingly rejected the company's contract proposal Sunday.

The union had recommended against accepting the company's "last, best and final offer" because its demands for a "4 percent pay increase retroactive to July 1, just cause termination, and a Teamsters health and pension plan" were rejected.

Kevin Hardison, a Local 631 business agent, declined to release the exact vote count and said the union plans to consult its attorneys about the possibility of arbitration.

Republic Services could not be reached for comment on the vote.
