NLV will consider plan for more parks

The North Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday will discuss a strategic plan to boost parks space and recreational opportunities for residents.

It is the first of eight plans to address city priorities council members set at a retreat last December.

Ken Albright, the city's parks and recreation director, said North Las Vegas currently has about 3 acres of parks space per 1,000 residents and would like to push the ratio to at least 5 acres per 1,000 residents.

At the core of the strategic plan is a proposal to hire a consultant to update the city's parks master plan, which has not been reviewed for about seven years.

"Certainly we need more parks," Councilwoman Shari Buck said, adding that she would like to see bigger neighborhood parks that include sports fields.
