Deadline nears for DA decision

A group of prosecutors who must decide if boxer Mike Tyson should be charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a former girlfriend are expected to meet early next week.

District Attorney Stewart Bell said today is the deadline for the attorneys reviewing the case to finish reading the "voluminous" police file provided by investigators nearly two weeks ago.

The attorneys will then meet on Tuesday or Wednesday to discuss their opinions, Bell said.

Police began investigating Tyson in September after a Las Vegas woman went to a hospital suffering from injuries she claimed she suffered when Tyson sexually assaulted her.

Another woman told police Tyson sexually assaulted her in December. That case is still under investigation.

Driver won't face charges

An elderly Las Vegas woman who left the scene after striking and killing a pedestrian will not face criminal charges.

Police believe Anna Toscano, 78, was driving the first of three vehicles that struck Lynette Spiller, 42, as she was jaywalking on East Charleston Boulevard just west of Nellis Boulevard on Jan. 1.

Toscano told police she didn't realize she'd struck someone. She thought someone had thrown a brick at her car.

After reviewing the evidence, Chief Deputy District Attorney Randall Weed said he doesn't believe Toscano acted unreasonably.

Weed said police records also showed that Toscano had called police shortly after the incident to report someone had thrown something at her car.
