Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 | 9:56 a.m.

Visitor volume fell for the fourth consecutive month in December, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported Tuesday.

December's 2.57 million visitors, a 6.2 percent decline from the 2.74 million reported in December 2000, brought the total for the year to 35 million, down 2.3 percent from the 35.8 million that visited Las Vegas the previous year.

The LVCVA also said hotel occupancy was down for the month and the year, but convention attendance was up. Occupancy fell 5.9 points to 72.2 percent in December for weekends and midweek stays at motels and hotels. Convention attendance was up 41.1 percent to 148,179 for the month and up 5.1 percent to 4 million for the year.

Visitation was flat for Laughlin with 305,446 visitors for the month, resulting in a total for 2001 of 4.5 million people, down 2.3 percent.

In Mesquite, volume was up 10.5 percent in December from the same month a year ago to 111,285 people. That brought the 2001 total to 1.6 million visitors, up 2.5 percent over the total for 2000.
