The Falls hike highlights program
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:
Hike Leaders Choice, The Falls: A 4 1/2 mile moderate to strenuous hike with the naturalist staff Friday. Meet at Willow Springs picnic area.
Canyon Critters: Learn about animals that make their home in Red Rock Canyon with staffer Kathy August 1-2 p.m. Friday.
White Rock Loop: A power hike led by Vera Vann on this moderate six-mile loop Saturday.
Boulder Extravaganza: A 3- to 4-mile moderate rock scrambling Sunday.
Winchester to host kids music event
The Winchester Community Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, presents "Itty Bitty Rhythm," at 9 a.m and 10:45 a.m. Saturday.
Children and parents will rotate to four stations including an "instrument petting zoo" where musicians will play and kids can touch and ask questions. There will also be other activities and surprise give-a-ways. To register, call 455-7340.
Recreation area hosts hikes, talks
Free guided hikes and informative talks are offered by the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the park's Alan Bible Visitor Center northeast of Boulder City.
Reservations are required for the guided hikes. Call 293-8990. Some upcoming programs:
Pinto Valley Hike: A moderate five- to six-mile hike at 9 a.m. Saturday, traveling into the Pinto Valley near the Overton Arm of Lake Mead.
Moving Mountains and Shifting Sands: A one-hour program beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, that reveals the geologic history of the Lake Mead region.
Tracks and Trails Hike: An easy to moderate two-mile hike at 9 a.m. Sunday that travels along the Wetlands Trail to the Las Vegas Wash Sunday.
South Bowl of Fire Hike: 9 a.m. Sunday, a moderate five-mile hike leading to spectacular rock formations and numerous wildlife viewing opportunities.
The Henderson Library District
has designated February as Food for Fines month. In lieu of paying outstanding fees, Henderson Library patrons are being asked to bring their overdue books along with a nonperishable food item, which then will be donated to the Henderson Allied Community Advocates. Call 579-2115.
The U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancers
Association will hold a mall dance 12:30-4 p.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset in Henderson. For more information, call 656-8690.
The Las Vegas Antique Bottles
and Collectibles Club will present its annual show noon-6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday in the Plaza's Triple Crown Convention Room. Call Dottie Daugherty at 452-1263.
Argentine evangelist and author
Sergio Scatahlini and his wife, Kathy, present "Effective and Productive Christianity," a free seminar at 7 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday at the International Church of Las Vegas, 8100 Westcliff Drive. Call 242-2273.
