Sluggers to battle at Cashman Field

Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 | 10:53 a.m.

Home run king Barry Bonds and 2001 World Series hero Luis Gonzalez are among the players who will take part in the third annual Big League Challenge home run contest on Saturday at Cashman Field.

Bonds, who broke Mark McGwire's single-season home run mark with 73 last season, is the top seed in the eight-man competition, which will be taped for broadcast by ESPN and shown starting on March 23. Bonds will take on Troy Glaus (41 homers in 2001) of the Anaheim Angels in the first round.

Other first round matchups include No. 2 seed Gonzalez, who hit 57 homers last year, against Richie Sexson (45) of the Milwaukee Brewers; No. 3 seed Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies (49) against defending champion Rafael Palmeiro (47); and No. 4 seed Shawn Green of the Dodgers (49) against Jim Thome (49) of the Cleveland Indians in the 11 a.m. opener.

Tickets priced from $8 to $20 can be purchased at Ticketmaster (474-4000) or at the Cashman Field box office. The gates will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
