Library tax OK’d for ballot

Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 | 11:42 a.m.

Henderson voters in November will decide on an elective tax to help build six libraries and buy new books.

The Clark County Debt Commission on Thursday unanimously approved the elective tax for the ballot. The question will ask home owners in the Henderson Library District to pay $14 annually over 30 years for every $100,000 of a home's taxable value.

Voters rejected a similar request in June, with 61 percent voting against it. Voters also rejected a public safety tax initiative for the second time in less than a year.

This election cycle a regional transportation tax initiative is expected to compete with the library tax.

But Joan Kerschner, director of the Henderson Library District, says Henderson residents need the books. Today, they have about half the state average of 2.02 books per resident.
