Dogs’ owner to handle euthanizing

Friday, Feb. 8, 2002 | 10:12 a.m.

The owner of four Great Danes that mauled an 11-year-old boy in January has tentatively agreed to euthanize the animals, Las Vegas Animal Control officials said today.

Animal control officials were scheduled to meet with the dogs' owner, Dail Kohler, today and expect to turn the dogs over to her to be euthanized.

"It's on her shoulders at this point," said Sgt. John John Fudenberg, a Las Vegas city marshal and spokesman for animal control. "She wants to use her own veterinarian, and there are some other details we need to work out."

Kohler, who was out of town at the time of the attack and could not be reached for comment this morning, could have requested a hearing in an attempt to save the dogs, but has said she would not do that.

Michael Foley was feeding the dogs on the afternoon of Jan. 23 at Kohler's home in a rural neighborhood near U.S. 95 Kyle Canyon Road when the animals attacked, Fudenberg said.

Foley's father heard his son's screams and was able to scare off the dogs, two 140-pound males and two 110-pound females.

Foley was listed in fair condition today at University Medical Center as he recovers from his injuries, which include bites all over his body.
