Zoning briefs

Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002 | 9:24 a.m.

Asian-themed complex approved

A new Asian-themed shopping center could soon be built at the corner of Spring Mountain Road and Edmond Street, west of Decatur Boulevard.

The Clark County Commission on Wednesday approved zoning for the retail complex over the objections of neighbors, the Spring Valley Town Advisory Board and county planning staff.

Land-use attorney Chris Kaempfer successfully argued that the center's 50-foot building heights wouldn't seriously affect neighbors because the first floor of the buildings is below neighboring homes. The developer, Pacific Diamond Plaza Partnership, also agreed to turn Edmond into a cul-de-sac to limit the impact of traffic on the neighborhood.

The vote was 7-0 to approve the shopping center.

"I happen to believe in cultural diversity," Commissioner Erin Kenny said at the zoning meeting.

Package plant OK'd for Logandale

The first of a new kind of sewage system in Clark County has received the go-ahead from the County Commission.

A "package plant," essentially a miniature version of the same technology used to treat municipal waste, received zoning approval from the commission Wednesday. The plant is planned for a 106-home development slated for Logandale, a small community 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

A new technology is needed because the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection will not allow any more traditional septic systems into the area. The county approved the basic concept of a package plant last year.

Neighbors of the proposed housing development had argued for alternative sewage treatment plants for the project.
