CARSON CITY -- Assembly Speaker Pro Tem Wendell Williams, D-Las Vegas, has agreed to pay $6,800 for failing to submit campaign finance reports or filing them late.

Williams sent a signed agreement to pay $3,000 by Friday and $3,800 by March 22 to the attorney general's office, Senior Deputy Attorney General Kateri Cavin said. He also agreed to file a campaign report that is a year overdue by the end of this week, she said.

In addition, Merv Iverson of Las Vegas, who was elected to the state Board of Education, has agreed to pay $575 for failing to submit his campaign finance report on time, Cavin said.

The attorney general's office last week gave 23 candidates including Williams until Feb. 5 to pay their fines or face lawsuits.

About 20 political candidates did not respond to the latest deadline, Cavin said. She said she would meet with Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa to determine the next step.

Last week Cavin filed suit against 18 political candidates who either failed to file their campaign reports or submitted them late. The suits sought payments of fines ranging from $25 to $15,000.
