Male Athlete of the Week: COREY TYLER
School: Silverado
Class: Senior
Sport: Basketball
Last week: Tyler, a 6-foot-8 center, scored 35 points and grabbed 29 rebounds to help the Skyhawks keep their playoff hopes alive with victories over Basic and Foothill. Tyler contributed 19 points and 17 rebounds in a 56-51 overtime win over the Wolves on Wednesday, then followed that with his third consecutive double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds) in a 54-51 win over the Falcons on Friday. "He sprained his knee in early December and basically missed four weeks, but his play the last five or six games has been what we anticipated it would be before the season," Silverado coach Mike Joseph said. "He has the ability to dominate for us."
Female Athlete of the Week: LYNDSAY GENSLER
School: Bonanza
Class: Junior
Sport: Basketball
Last week: Gensler, a 6-foot-1 point guard, became the Bengals' all-time leading scorer (boys or girls) on Friday night against Durango, surpassing the mark set by Ronda Williams ('01). Gensler tallied 21 points to up her three-year total to 1,299 points, breaking Williams' mark of 1,278. Gensler finished the week with two-game totals of 42 points, 21 rebounds, 11 assists, 10 blocks and six steals. "She's done such a good job for us. She's been our most valuable player since her freshman year," Bonanza coach Cathy Szymarek said. "She leads our team in ever statistical category and did last year also. She doesn't like to be singled out, but this was a big accomplishment."
