Savvy wine buys: Castell de Falset ‘98 Tarragona

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 | 8:25 a.m.

This spectacular, unfiltered red wine is a blend of three grape varietals, which explains, in part, its great complexity and sophistication. The wine is 45 percent red Grenache, 35 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 percent Tempranillo, the principal grape of wines in Spain's celebrated Rioja. The vineyards lie on steep slopes rich with slate soil, and the fruit, most notably plums and cherries, is unusually prominent. Though a round wine with forward tannins, it is ready to drink right now, but perhaps an even better strategy would be to lay it down for two or three years, to let those tannins soften.

Available at Las Vegas Wine Company, $12.69, and Marche Bacchus, $13.99.
