Money approved for dental school

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002 | 9:17 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- University of Nevada, Las Vegas officials promised state legislators Tuesday that rehabilitation of two recently purchased buildings for a new dental school would cost no more than $11.2 million.

School representatives appeared before the Legislative Interim Finance Committee to approve the transfer of $7 million from UNLV to the state Public Works Board, which handles construction projects.

Instead of constructing new buildings, UNLV purchased property -- on Charleston Boulevard near University Medical Center -- from the Employers Insurance Co. of Nevada. for $13.5 million.

Two of the buildings -- one to be used for classrooms, the other for offices -- will be refurbished.

Tony Flores, vice president of finance, and Juanita Fain, vice president of academics, both said they would not return to the state for more money to refurbish the two buildings.

Fain said the school, however, will be back for money to buy equipment.

UNLV has sold $18.7 million in bonds to help get the dental school started. That money will be reimbursed through student fees.

Flores said the Board of Regents authorized an increase in student fees of $1 during the biennium for capital projects.
