Special programs offered for kids

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes and walks free of charge, but reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922. Some upcoming programs:

Pine Creek: An easy three-mile hike through Pine Creek Thursday.

Red Rock Day Camp: Children ages 6 and older are welcome to hike into Pine Creek Friday to learn some secrets of the Mojave Desert and then return to the Visitors Center for lunch and complete the Junior Ranger program.

Canyon Critters: A program at the Visitors Center 1-2 p.m. Friday. Learn about the variety of animals that live at Red Rock.

Nevada State Symbols: A program at the Visitors Center Friends Room 1-3 p.m. No signup is necessary.

Ash Spring: Search for wildlife with Athena in this little oasis on this moderate two-mile hike.

St. Viator School Foundation

will host a dinner and auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Rio to honor Suzanne and Greg Hafen and Pat and Bob Mulroy. Tickets are $100. Call Kim Walker at 363-4804.

The "2002 UNLV Community Wetlands Day:

A Wash Green-Up Event" will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Clark County Wetlands Park Nature Preserve (via shuttle from parking site). Approximately 400 volunteers are needed for this project. For more information or to register, call 822-8584.

The U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association

and Rebel DanceSport will hold a February dance 7-10 p.m. Saturday in UNLV's Moyer Student Union Ballroom. Admission is $7; $5 for members and students. For more information, call 656-8690.

A Valentine's Day program,

featuring stories, songs and crafts will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the North Las Vegas Library. Call 633-1070.
