Henderson judge is honored

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002 | 9 a.m.

Henderson Municipal Judge Ken Proctor has been named judge of the year by the Nevada Judges Association.

Proctor, a Henderson Municipal Court judge since 1991, received the honor recently at the association's semiannual state conference in North Las Vegas.

Proctor was chosen from more than 85 municipal judges and justices of the peace for the honor that recognizes exemplary service on the bench.

"His ability in the courtroom and his most able management of one of the largest urban case loads in the state is well known," Bill Maupin, chief justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, said.

"More than that, his sensitivity and fairness to the people who come before him -- lawyers, parties and witnesses, alike -- speaks volumes in support of this very prestigious award."

Active in the Henderson community, Proctor has supported such organizations as SAFE House Domestic Violence Shelter and the Henderson Boys and Girls Clubs.

He has supported classroom visits to his courtroom for children to watch proceedings and developed a program in which actual driving-under-the-influence trials are held in local high schools to teach teenagers the dangers and consequences of drunken driving.

Before becoming a judge, Proctor was a Henderson Police officer for six years. He also has served on the state Domestic Violence Prevention Council.
