House committee kills gambling legislation

Monday, Feb. 4, 2002 | 11:13 a.m.

HONOLULU -- Two bills that would have allowed legalized casino gambling in Hawaii were killed on Saturday by the House Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs Committee.

The nine members of the committee present for the four-hour hearing voted unanimously to keep the bills in committee. One would have allowed one stand-alone casino each in Waikiki and Kapolei. Another bill would have allowed a casino-resort in Kapolei.

Opponents said any financial benefit the state might reap from legalized gambling would be offset by an even higher cost of negative social impacts.

Sun International Hotels Inc. had proposed paying the state $100 million for an exclusive, 20-year gambling license to build a $1 billion, 1,500-room resort-casino.
