Vegas resort sues over canceled conference

Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 | 11:16 a.m.

Mandalay Bay sued to recover $125,410 in damages from TradeStation Technologies Inc. after it terminated an agreement to hold a trade conference at the Las Vegas Strip megaresort Nov. 14-19.

The suit is the second in two months filed by Mandalay Bay over conference cancellations.

The hotel alleged TradeStation admitted it was responsible for paying damages for up to 60 percent of the resort's anticipated gross revenues from the event if TradeStation cancelled the contract without cause.

Mandalay Bay said it reserved 1,050 room nights for TradeStation's conference and made arrangements for four coffee breaks and three lunches for 600 participants and a dinner for 100 participants.

Miami-based TradeStation could not be reached for comment on the allegations.

Mandalay Bay earlier sued Irvine, Calif.-based Conference and Travel Management, alleging it improperly used the events of Sept. 11 as a pretext to cancel a conference scheduled for Oct. 26-31.

Similar allegations were made by MGM Grand hotel-casino in a lawsuit against Xelus Corp. of Fairport, N.Y. The dispute was over whether terrorist attacks were the reason the company cancelled a Las Vegas convention set for Oct. 6-13.
