Letter: Bush sounding a lot like Nixon

Friday, Feb. 1, 2002 | 4:12 a.m.

Am I mistaken, or is George W. Bush sounding more and more like Richard Nixon during the early stages of the Watergate inquiry? He asserts that his prior communications with Enron executives are protected by executive privilege.

Bush calls the General Accounting Office's congressional order for documents an encroachment on his ability to conduct business. He cites the need of the president to preserve the confidences of private communications. All of these arguments sound like Watergate-style presidential stonewalling to me.

At first I thought there was little or nothing to an Enron political scandal, but now I'm beginning to wonder.
