CHICAGO -- United Airlines said Monday that it would probably soon need to lay off a large number of workers, and that it would decide in the next several weeks exactly whom to lay off.
The airline, a unit of the UAL Corp., said in a recorded telephone message to employees that "significant layoffs are likely in the short run."
United has 81,000 employees. The announcement came as United was scrambling to wrest deep short-term concessions from its unions.
