Officers ID’d in killing of motorist

Two Metro Police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 44-year-old man who allegedly tried to run an officer over have been identified as a gang unit detective and a patrol officer.

William Marks, who works with the gang unit, and Bryon Bunisky, who works in the northeast area of town, remain on paid administrative leave, according to department policy.

Bunisky joined Metro in 1999, and Marks has been with the department for about four years, department spokesman Jose Montoya said.

Police said they saw Gary Orozco driving erratically near Owens Avenue and Lamb Boulevard and tried to pull him over, but he didn't stop. He crashed into a Metro cruiser, then tried to run an officer over, police said. Bunisky and Marks fired at Orozco, police said.

Orozco lost control of his vehicle and drove into a nearby yard, hitting a gas meter. He died at the scene.
