Letter: Las Vegas not good at recycling

Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002 | 9:01 a.m.

Unfortunately, all that was provided were the red, white and blue containers dumped at our doorstep with no instructions. What kinds of materials can or cannot be recycled? How about cardboard boxes after moving into a residence?

After inquiring, we were not allowed to purchase a recycling pushcart. Republic said it no longer has a vendor and couldn't even recommend where to get a cart!

It is no wonder that Las Vegas has one of the lowest levels of recycling in the nation. Without educating our more than 5,000 new residents moving into the city each month about the importance of recycling, we will continue to waste year after year.

In San Francisco this month, they just celebrated the fact that they now recycle more than they waste by reaching a 51 percent recycling rate. It will definitely be a crap shoot to reach that rate in our city.
