Letter: Environmental source no expert

Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 | 9:47 a.m.

For starters, Ohmart feels, "Cattle have been the most widespread, destructive influence on the streams and rivers of the West" and that grazing will destroy all Southwest rivers within 30 to 50 years unless eliminated. Such pith has led to a wide influence with environmental groups, especially those seeking "scientific" justification for elimination of public-lands grazing. The Center for Biological Diversity and Forest Guardians have used Ohmart as an expert in their litigation, including the loach minnow suit in Arizona and New Mexico. And it's not just grazing. Ohmart is a signatory to the "American Heritage Forests" letter demanding implementation of the Clinton administration's flawed roadless initiative.

So while tamarisks make salt -- Ohmart brings plenty of his own.
