Columnist Peter Benton: Montgomery captures Southwest Section final

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
Under rather cold and windy conditions, a large field of area professionals from the Las Vegas Chapter, Southwest Section of the PGA, held their Grand Finale golf tournament at the Las Vegas Country Club last week.
The course seemed to play exceptionally long and the participants could not believe just how difficult the layout was. Many pins were tucked behind greenside bunkers while others were precariously positioned atop the crest of small knolls which made putting an extremely delicate undertaking.
Nothing, however, seemed to faze Shadow Creek's Monty Montgomery who won the event with an excellent round of 3-under 69.
Jerry Holley of All World Sports followed at even-par, 72, with home course professionals, Carl Seelman and Tony Silva sharing third place with 74s.
Dan Hammell of the TPC Canyons, along with Jim Neighbors (Palm Valley) and Cascade's Brad Church were next with 75's. John Creaney, (LVCC), Wes Weston (South Shore) and Kim Dolan (Craig Ranch) followed at 76.
The ageless, Tom Storey, (unattached), led the way in the Senior Division with a well-played, even-par, 72. Mike Harper, also unattached, placed second with 77, and in third spot with 78 was Spanish Trail's Jerry Roberts.
In the three-man team event, (the format of which was one best-ball on the odd holes and two-best balls on the even balls,) Holley, Church and Chris Schindler, (TPC Summerlin) were victorious with a 102. Silva, Tyson Tidwell (TPC Canyons) and Doug Stevens, (Wilson Sporting Goods,) were second with 105, while in third with 106 was the trio of Storey, Hammell and Creaney.
