Letter: No public input on lands bill

Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 | 8:10 a.m.

In the Dec. 20 Las Vegas Sun, Sen. Harry Reid tells how the public lands bill passed by Congress this year didn't have all the acres that he wanted protected in it. What did Sen. Reid want? All of Southern Nevada?

This bill had more wilderness than the Bureau of Land Management recommended after seven years of studies. Then there are the thousands of acres of wilderness that had never been considered for wilderness that Sen. Reid snuck into the bill. All of this happened with no public input. There were no public meetings about the public lands bill in Las Vegas.

I am just glad that Sen. John Ensign and Congressman Jim Gibbons had some say about what was put in the public lands bill or there would be no true recreation areas in Clark County.
