Two Vegas cafeterias close

Richardson, Texas-based restaurant chain Furr's Restaurant Group Inc. said it closed two Furr's Family Dining restaurants in Las Vegas as part of a corporate restructuring nationwide.
The closures of the two restaurants at 150 S. Valley View Blvd. near Meadows Mall on Dec. 10 and at 2985 E. Sahara Ave. on Dec. 17 were part of Furr's divestiture of 11 underperforming restaurants nationwide by year-end. A total of 65 Las Vegas employees were laid off.
"Some of the workers were offered a transfer to other restaurants, which would have necessitated relocation for them. But they all chose to stay in Las Vegas," said Jill Laird, Furr's director of marketing.
"Las Vegas is an extremely competitive market," she said. "We had a $5 after 5 p.m. promotion running in the fourth quarter among more than half the Furr's chain including Las Vegas and that boosted traffic for us in Las Vegas -- but it didn't get us the customer counts we needed to continue operations at those stores."
