Nellis builds for future

In November 2003, Nellis Air Force Base is scheduled to open the new home of the Air Force's premier training center for battle commanders.

Ground was broken Thursday on the 40,000-square-foot, two-story building, that will cost approximately $9 million, and will house the Combined Nellis Air and Space Operations Center.

The center, which includes sophisticated computers and communications arrays, allows commanders to receive intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance quickly in one location and make decisions.

The center has been housed in a smaller building and portable trailers since the technology began to be used two and a half years ago.

"This building will serve as a platform where future leaders of the military can learn to control and command air and space forces around the world," said Lt. Col. John Rosenbach, deputy director of the center. "It also provides us with a way to test new technologies before implementing them."
