Illegal machines seized

Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 | 11:18 a.m.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- More than 210 illegal video gambling machines have been seized since Tuesday, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said Wednesday.

Chief Robert Stewart said SLED has gotten complaints for months about businesses giving merchandise, gift certificates and cash pay outs in exchange for the player's credit on the machines.

The seizures during the past two days all involved devices the state considers illegal to possess, Stewart said.

York led the counties with 75 machines being seized so far, while Spartanburg had 31, Greenville 27 and Richland 25.

"There's always an effort to run some type of new machine into the state," Stewart said. "We're continually having to look at machines to see if they are legal or illegal."
