North Las Vegas will have 96 firefighters Thursday when 10 new ones graduate from the training academy.
The additional firefighters will fill vacancies caused by retirements and are also needed because a new fire station will open next year at 5725 Allen Lane, Fire Department Training Supervisor Chuck Steadham said Monday. The new fire station is to open by April, officials have said.
The new firefighters will spend their first week riding along on calls with more experienced firefighters and will head into regular duty Dec. 28, Steadham said.
"These graduates are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and anxious to serve the residents of our city," Fire Chief Bob Dodge said in a prepared statement. "We are fortunate to be attracting such high quality employees."
The 10 were hired as cadets in October 2002 and went through a 10-week training academy. The graduation ceremony will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at the North Las Vegas City Council Chambers, 2200 Civic Center Drive.
