Lorenzi pond called safe for fish

Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 | 9:23 a.m.

A man was seen dumping a suspicious liquid into the pond at Lorenzi Park last week, but city officials say they have tested the water and found it safe for fish and other wildlife.

The man was spotted by a city tree-trimming crew dumping a bucket of liquid into the lake at the city park, off West Washington Avenue and Rancho Drive Wednesday.

Officials believe the bucket contained oil or waste, but the man told Las Vegas marshals that he dumped a bucket of fish bait into the lake, according to an incident report. The report said the lake had a strong odor of oil and the water was discolored.

The man was issued a misdemeanor citation for dumping.

The city's Environmental Division of the Public Works Department did a chemical analysis of the pond water following the incident and determined that the water was safe.

"Everything is fine," Debby Ackerman, spokeswoman for the Department of Field Operations said. "It dissipated quickly and was never a threat to the fish or wildlife."

The pond holds 7 million gallons of water and is stocked with trout during the cooler times of the year and with catfish during the summer months. New fish are added several times a year.
