Expanded resort tops Foxwoods in slot handle

Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 | 9:25 a.m.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- The $1 billion expansion of the Mohegan Sun casino, once considered Foxwoods Resort Casino's smaller competitor, is beginning to pay off.

Figures released Monday show that Mohegan Sun for the first time has topped Foxwoods in the total amount of money bet on slot machines in a month.

The total amount bet on slot machines, called the "handle," was $790.5 million at Mohegan Sun in November, more than $40 million higher than at Foxwoods.

The combined handle for the two casinos -- considered a key measure of the health of the business, because it reflects the volume of gambling activity -- was $1.54 billion, an increase of nearly 5 percent compared with a year ago.
