Red Rock offers programs for kids
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers hikes, walks and programs free of charge. To make required reservations or for more information on the following or upcoming programs, call 363-1922:
Desert Babies: A program offered Wednesday featuring stories, activities, crafts and a snack, for 3 and 4 year olds.
Moenkopi Morning: An easy two-mile hike Wednesday on a trail that has fantastic views and a peaceful breeze.
Ancient Ponderosa: One of the best trails in Red Rock. Hike with Janis to Pine Creek and explore the frozen creek around the old homestead on the three-mile easy hike, Thursday.
Red Rock Day Camp: An outdoor classroom at Red Rock Canyon, Friday, for interested homeschoolers, vacationers and those who are on track break.
Winter Story Time: Stories read by the Red Rock staff and Clark County librarians, Saturday. Cider, cocoa, and some cookies will be served. Craft and puppet stories included.
Mystery March: A five-mile strenuous hike Saturday to burn off some pre-holiday stress.
Feeling Loopy IV: An opportunity to experience the diversity within Red Rock's plant life on the White Rock Loop on the six-mile moderately strenuous hike.
Coyote Kids: Ages 6 and older are welcome to join Ranger Vicki on a journey through the "Time Machine" while traveling to Fossil Ridge, Sunday.
A Chill and a Thrill: A three-mile moderate hike into Ice Box Canyon Monday and watch for swallows and seek out the icicles.
Senior group hosts Chickenfoot Party
The Sunrise Senior Friends, 3101 S. Maryland Parkway No. 314, presents its Chickenfoot Party from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday.
Enjoy dominoes and other games such as Pictionary, Scrabble, cards and more.
Also Senior Friends will present "Better Safe Than Sorry," an event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday. Visit the office during normal office hours and get photocopies of all your licenses, identification, credit and insurance cards.
Sign language classes are planned
Faith Community Lutheran Church will begin offering sign language classes for adults and children ages 10 and up.
Admission is $10. Interested participants should contact the church office at 921-2700 or view the website (www.FaithLasVegas.org). Times and dates for the classes will be determined based on the community's response.
Recreation center plans Teen Zone
The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for its winter Teen Zone program offered Monday through Dec. 27 (closed Dec. 25) and Dec. 30 through Jan. 3 (closed Jan. 1) at Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. and Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.
Participation is $70 per week per youth (must be attending or have completed grades 5-8). Discounts are available to families enrolling two or more children. Registration is subject to space availability.
Teen Zone is a multi-faceted youth enrichment program that offers participants the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities, including cooking, music, movies, art, and creative expression.
Field trips and other local excursions may be included. For more information, call 565-2121 or 450-5885.
Firefighters to hold scholarship event
The United Firefighters of Southern Nevada will hosts its 10th annual James Walker and Monroe Williams Scholarship fund-raiser at 6 p.m. Friday at the Suncoast hotel.
The program will include special guests, Walker and Williams, who were the first blacks hired on the Las Vegas Fire Department and were responsible for opening the door for all minorities.
Assistant Fire Chief Eugene Campbell, chairman of the Scholarship Committee, will be the master of ceremonies. Cocktails, food, and music will be available throughout the evening.
This year's scholarship recipients are: Christopher Guy, Antelope Valley College; Kandance Weaver, Spellman College, and Joshua D. Swachamer, Morehouse College.
The programs are directed toward improving minority and underprivileged communities within the Las Vegas Valley, recruiting a culturally diverse and qualified fire service applicant pool, and training its members to become exceptional leaders in the fire service and the community.
