Monday, Dec. 16, 2002 | 9:45 a.m.

Pair arraigned in gun theft

The two Las Vegas men accused of stealing guns and ammunition from a local armory were arraigned Thursday in Justice Court.

Jonathan Avendaro, 22, and Joshua Moyers, 20, appeared before Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangelo.

The two men face 29 felony charges each, which include burglary with intent to commit a felony, grand larceny of a firearm and possession of stolen property.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 27.

Avendaro and Moyers are being held at the Clark County Detention Center. Bail has been set at $94,000 each.

Police allege the two men burglarized an office of the state's Parole and Probation Division the weekend of Nov. 29.

Burglars kicked in a wooden door and stole 22 handguns and up to 5,000 rounds of ammunition, police said.

More indictments returned in scam

Another nine people have been indicted by a Clark County grand jury for their part in an insurance scheme that bilked the California State Automobile Association out of $180,300.

Seven others had already been charged in the plot to submit false claims.

Those indicted on felony counts of obtaining money under false pretenses and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud were Terri D. Bragg, Rodney B. Winters, Basheba Peoples, Cedric Peoples, Exie M. Flowers, Chalandos R. Johnson, Trina C. Smith, Touny A. Crowe and Salim T. Elam.
