Trauma cases deplete area blood supply

Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 | 9:45 a.m.

Several trauma cases this week have depleted area hospital blood supplies, causing serious concern at United Blood Services, the area's blood provider.

"If blood donors don't respond now," donor recruitment director Jan Dalby said, "Southern Nevada hospitals may not have enough blood to handle anticipated holiday usage."

Blood center hours have been extended through the month.

The following community blood drives are open to the public. United Blood Services and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host the largest single-day blood drive this Saturday.

The community-wide LDS church event is scheduled at two locations:

Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old and 110 pounds. Typically, it takes about 90 minutes to donate blood. All donors must present proper identification.

Donors can call 233-9620 to get days, time, an appointment, eligibility assistance and donation locations.
